You can buy cheaper USB lights, but Kensington's quality speaks for itself and is reiterated with each of their products, including this one. Once that was done, I have had ZERO problems with it moving. If it were used in a stationary application, it would probably do just fine. The switch allows you to use just 4 LEDs or all 8. The part that probably isn't so obvious, is the laptop is used in my patrol car.
For my needs, 4 LEDs were sufficient. I used a zip tie through the gap between the screen and keyboard to secure most of the cable. The light head is large and somewhat too heavy to maintain it's position in a moving vehicle. I purchased this light for my laptop, obviously. I doubt Kensington intended for such an application.
As far as the amount of light is concerned, it is GREAT.
I thought, I know how to fix this thing. I read the reviews before buying the light. My fix is sandpaper on the lens, I roughed it up with 320 grit sandpaper, it gives the lens a slightly diffused quality and it gives the 8 LEDs just enough dispersal to light the entire keyboard on my mid size laptop.
Would not buy again. This unit is not very bright. It would be ok if you just wanted to illuminate your keyboard, but not for reading (get an illuminated keyboard instead if this is what you're after).
It is a good tool when you need more light but it doesn't seem to be very strong. It helps but could be better.
This light is nifty, however the beam spread should be wider.it only lights half the keyboard.
